Learn practical, effective concepts and techniques to help you avoid violent confrontation, or deal with it if you can not. We promote maximum/proportional violence for self-preservation, using chokes, cranks, joint-locks and escapes to facilitate our safe extraction. Empower yourself with skills that work when it matters most.
Develop real, functional grappling skills through our hybrid approach to BJJ. Whether you’re training for fitness, competition, or self-defence, you’ll build strength, strategy, and composure under pressure in a safe, supportive environment.
Our kids’ classes teach focus, discipline, and respect — all while having fun and staying active. Through structured drills and sparring, children learn confidence, self-control, and teamwork both on and off the mats.
I am a BJJ black-belt under 3rd-degree black-belt Mark Tucker, a true pioneer of British MMA and BJJ. In my youth I studied Tae Kwon Do, kickboxing and Kung Fu, but was only introduced to grappling in 2007, when I joined my first mixed martial arts club. I had several MMA bouts at amateur level, and trained all over the UK and USA with some exceptional coaches before settling in Cornwall in 2015.
From 1993-2020 I served in the elite Parachute Regiment, Pathfinders, and Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) school. I spent a career teaching physical training, weapons, tactics, combatives, and survival, in some of the world’s most hostile environments, and that experience has taught me how to teach. My lessons are always prepared and structured using EDIP. I’ll Explain and Demonstrate, you’ll Imitate, and we’ll all Practice together.
At Combat Athletics Academy, our grappling style blends Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and Military Combatives. The focus is on realistic, efficient techniques that protect us while neutralising any threat quickly and effectively.
Training is built around practicality and discipline - minimising risk, maximising control, and developing skill through consistent, focused practice.
We’re a friendly, inclusive club that welcomes everyone. Controlled aggression is part of the process, but egos, bad attitudes, and bullying have no place here.
Sessions usually run for 90 minutes and follow a structured flow: specific warm-up, teaching phase, summary, and specific sparring — all designed to help you learn, apply, and refine your skills.
